Offline Console Games: Prepare a PS5 or Xbox Session
Plan offline console games on PS5 and Xbox: check digital licenses, console activation, installed content and game-specific requirements before disconnecting.

Prepare the session you actually want to play
Offline console games need more than an installed icon. You need the relevant content, permission to run it on that console and a game mode that can operate without its online services. Preparing those pieces while connected is easier than diagnosing a failed start during a trip or outage.
This checklist concerns PS5 and Xbox One or Series X|S system behavior documented in US support pages, checked October 19, 2026. It is not a list of games certified offline by ProjectGAMR. Start with one concrete goal, such as continuing an installed single-player chapter, and verify that goal rather than assuming the whole library behaves alike.
Check PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play
Sony's Console Sharing and Offline Play setting allows people using the enabled PS5 to play purchased, downloaded games while offline. It can be enabled on one PS5 at a time. Find it through Users and Accounts in Settings, then Other; inspect the setting on the console you intend to take.
Do this before losing the connection, especially after changing consoles. For subscription-supplied content, Sony also tells players to check that their subscription remains active and that the game is still available. A successful download does not establish permanent ownership of everything a subscription once supplied. Note whether your planned game was purchased separately or accessed through a membership.
Confirm which machine is your home Xbox
Xbox's home-console guidance describes a digital license registered to the home Xbox, giving access online or offline. Only one console can hold that designation at a time. Switching it moves offline access, and Microsoft limits changes to five within a one-year period.
On the intended console, inspect My home Xbox under Personalization in the General settings. After moving the designation, Xbox says downloading or launching games registers their licenses there. Do not treat switching as a troubleshooting action to repeat casually: record which console you selected, complete preparation there and preserve your remaining changes for when you need them.
Verify the mode and the installed pieces
Xbox's offline guide distinguishes compatible single-player or local-multiplayer games from activities that need internet, including online multiplayer and cloud gaming. It also notes that discs require installation, and that a disc from a different Xbox generation may need an online update before offline use.
For your chosen title, inspect the publisher's current requirements and any separate campaign or language downloads. A practical note might say: intended chapter installed, local profile available, online event excluded. This is a preparation example, not a claim that every console game has modular downloads or that a disc bypasses a publisher's server dependency.
Rehearse a full start before leaving
While you can still reconnect, finish installation and updates, close the game and try starting the intended mode without the connection. Load the relevant local save and confirm you can reach actual gameplay. This proposed rehearsal checks more than a title screen or a store's download-complete notice.
Xbox provides Go offline in Network settings for planned disconnected use. Its guidance advises keeping the online setting during an unexpected service outage so the console can reconnect automatically. Choose the procedure that matches your situation; a travel rehearsal and waiting for service recovery are different tasks.
Keep local progress and later synchronization distinct
Xbox says offline play can save progress locally, while syncing progress and accessing saves from another Xbox requires a connection. Before travelling, check that the save you need is already available on the machine you will use. Do not rely on a remote save being reachable after departure.
When reconnecting, let the platform finish its normal synchronization before continuing on another console. If your rehearsal fails, keep the exact game, mode and error message together for the appropriate support guide. The objective is a dependable prepared session, not a promise that one activation setting removes every license, subscription or server requirement.
