Cloud Gaming vs Remote Play: Which Machine Runs the Game?

Cloud gaming vs Remote Play starts with where the game runs. Compare Xbox and PlayStation requirements, supported games, devices, regions and account limits.

Find the machine doing the work

Cloud gaming vs Remote Play starts with one distinction: cloud gaming runs a supported game on the provider's infrastructure, while Remote Play connects you to your own console. Both can show a streamed picture on another screen, but that similarity does not make their libraries, subscriptions or connection requirements interchangeable.

When a streaming session fails, identifying the host narrows the question. Is your own console unavailable, or is the cloud service, account or game ineligible? A strong Wi-Fi signal cannot supply an entitlement or make an unsupported title appear in a cloud library.

Xbox Remote Play depends on your console

Xbox's Remote Play page describes playing games installed on an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One with remote features enabled. It lists compatible browser-supported devices including phones, tablets and PCs, alongside selected TVs and headsets. A Microsoft account with an Xbox profile and the appropriate connection are required.

This route is about reaching a console you already have. It is not permission to stream every purchased game from Microsoft's cloud. The documentation also warns that some games and online multiplayer can have subscription requirements; connecting remotely does not remove the underlying game's access conditions.

Xbox Cloud Gaming has a separate eligibility check

The US Xbox Cloud Gaming page checked on October 19, 2026 lists Essential, Premium and Ultimate with 5, 10 and 15 included monthly cloud hours respectively. It also identifies supported free-to-play exceptions, such as Fortnite with a free Microsoft account. PC Game Pass does not include those cloud hours.

Supported devices include Xbox One and Series consoles as well as other listed screens. Game availability varies by plan, platform, time and region. Streaming games you own applies to select cloud-playable games, not every item in your purchase history. Consult the current game listing and plan before treating a download entitlement as a streaming entitlement.

PlayStation Portal offers both paths with different rules

For Remote Play, Sony says Portal streams compatible games installed on a paired PS5 that is powered on or in Rest Mode. Remote Play itself does not require PlayStation Plus, although a game's online multiplayer requirement can still apply.

Portal's cloud option instead requires PlayStation Plus Premium and streams eligible PS5 games from supported catalogs or selected digital purchases. Sony describes cloud play even when your PS5 is off. Owning the handheld does not turn its two connection modes into the same service.

Country, account and game restrictions still matter

Sony's Portal cloud support page lists supported countries, including the United States, Canada and Japan, and excludes their overseas territories. Mexico is absent from the list checked for this article. It also excludes child accounts and PS3 or PS4 games from Portal cloud streaming. These restrictions concern that cloud feature, not a blanket claim about all PlayStation services.

Xbox likewise requires a supported cloud region and device. Check each service's own list rather than assuming that availability on one platform establishes availability on another. A friend's successful connection in another country is an example of their setup, not confirmation of yours.

Choose a path using the session you actually need

For a hypothetical evening with the television occupied, Remote Play might use a game already installed on your console. For a session without access to that console, investigate cloud eligibility instead. These examples explain the architecture; they are not performance tests or promises about latency.

Before starting, identify the host, exact game, account type, plan, region, device and network requirements. This article uses US-facing documentation checked on October 19, 2026. Plan limits and supported libraries can change, so retain the distinction even when the product details change.
