Console Performance Modes: Frame Rate, Resolution and VRR
Compare console performance modes by separating frame rate, output resolution and VRR. Learn what settings mean with an official Ratchet & Clank example.

A mode name starts the question
Console performance modes describe a developer's chosen balance of rendering features and frame-rate goals. A label such as Performance or Fidelity does not specify the same settings in every game. Read the explanation beside the option, including which console model and game update it describes.
This explainer uses official PlayStation settings, Xbox's technical explanation and Insomniac's description of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart on PS5 Pro, checked October 19, 2026. These are documented capabilities and developer statements. They are not ProjectGAMR benchmarks, measurements of your television or evidence that one mode is best for every player.
Separate images produced from screen refreshes
Frame rate counts the frames a game produces per second; refresh rate describes the display's update frequency. A 120 Hz output setting does not itself prove that the game delivers 120 different frames every second. The game, selected mode and display connection all matter.
For an ideal evenly paced sequence, divide 1,000 milliseconds by the frame rate: 30 fps gives about 33.3 ms between frames, 60 gives 16.7 ms, and 120 gives 8.3 ms. This arithmetic describes frame intervals, not complete button-to-screen delay. Xbox's latency article discusses several stages in that pipeline, which is why one number cannot stand in for the entire experience.
An output resolution is another piece of information
PlayStation's video menu reports the current output signal and the connected HDMI device's capabilities. It also provides separate controls for resolution, VRR and 120 Hz output. These are system-level checks; the game's graphics menu still determines which rendering option you selected.
Imagine two modes both reaching a television through a 4K output signal. That shared signal does not tell you that their shadows, reflections or internal rendering methods are identical. Write down the developer's stated tradeoff rather than inferring it from the television's information panel. Resolution, visual effects and frame rate answer related but different questions.
VRR addresses timing rather than creating game content
Variable refresh rate lets a compatible screen adjust its refresh timing. Sony documents support-dependent results; Xbox's technical article discusses the relationship between missed frames, refresh timing and visible tearing. Compatibility is part of the claim, including the screen and the relevant console output.
VRR should not be read as a promise that a low frame-rate mode becomes a different advertised mode. It does not supply an unannounced ray-tracing option or turn a game's target into a measured result. If you change VRR while comparing modes, record that change separately so you know which setting might explain a difference you notice.
Ratchet & Clank shows why the hardware suffix matters
On Sony's PS5 Pro page, Insomniac core technology director Mike Fitzgerald describes Rift Apart's Performance Pro mode as combining Fidelity-mode image quality and ray-tracing features with a 60 fps presentation. He separately identifies Fidelity Pro as adding rendering features based on ray tracing.
The useful lesson is the scope of that description: this is a named game's PS5 Pro implementation. It does not describe the original PS5's menus, every Insomniac title or every scene's measured frame rate. Likewise, an image-quality claim should not be silently rewritten as a claim that every frame is rendered at a fixed native resolution.
Compare one repeatable scene and keep the question narrow
For a personal comparison, choose a safe section you can revisit and keep the camera route similar. Change one graphics mode, then notice a defined feature: motion while turning, a reflection or distant detail. Leave difficulty and other assists unchanged. This is a suggested observation method, not a test we performed.
Record the console model, game version, selected mode and display output alongside your preference. Saying that a mode felt clearer during your camera turn is useful; claiming an exact frame-rate improvement needs measurement. Choose the option that suits that session, while preserving the difference between a developer's target, a compatible output and what you personally observed.
