Console Game Delisting: Store Sales, Redownloads and Online Play
Console game delisting raises separate questions about store sales, redownloads and online play. See what happened to Forza Horizon 4, Wii U and 3DS.

Ask three questions about availability
Console game delisting removes a route to acquiring a game through a store. If you plan to play it, check three things separately. Can a new customer buy it? Can an existing owner retrieve their copy? Does the feature they want still work?
Imagine three friends discussing the same game. One wants to buy it for the first time, another wants to reinstall a copy, and the third wants to race online. They could all read the same store notice and still need different information. Forza Horizon 4 and Nintendo's older systems show how those answers can change on different dates.
Forza Horizon 4 set terms for existing owners
In June 2024, Playground Games set December 15, 2024 as the date Forza Horizon 4 would leave the Microsoft Store, Steam and Xbox Game Pass. The announcement attributed the digital sales change to licensing and partner agreements.
The same notice said owners could continue downloading their game and owned content, with offline and online play continuing after the sale ended. The notice also said physical copies would still work after delisting. To read an announcement like this for your own library, identify how you obtained the base game and which add-ons you acquired separately.
A playlist can have its own end date
Playground Games gave the last Festival Playlist a separate timetable, with Series 77 set to finish on August 22, 2024. A player interested in that event needed a different date from someone checking the end of digital sales.
The US Xbox product page lists Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S for the Standard Edition. Its console online multiplayer requirement names Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate. A group planning a race can check game access and the required membership first, then confirm the online mode in the publisher’s current service information.
Nintendo ended store purchases before online play
Nintendo's Americas support page records that Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family eShop purchases ended on March 27, 2023. Nintendo dates the general end of online play to April 8, 2024, with exceptions. Its support pages still describe redownloads of purchased content and access to software updates without giving an end date.
A player returning to a purchased title has two questions here. Can the console retrieve the game, and can a feature inside it connect? Record the status of each service beside the date you checked. Check the title's support notice alongside the platform's general timeline.
Name the activity inside the game
Nintendo gives a specific example in StreetPass Mii Plaza. StreetPass can still exchange data locally between Nintendo 3DS family systems. Online distribution of new Puzzle Swap panels ended. The status of Mii Plaza therefore depends on the activity someone is trying to use.
For an imagined meetup, write down the local exchange you want to use and confirm it with the people bringing the systems. Someone looking for new panels through internet delivery would need the answer for that feature. Naming the activity gives everyone a clearer plan than confirming they can all open the same software.
Make an availability note you can reuse
For a delisted console game, record the edition, store region and date you checked. Note the sale status and identify the account or physical copy that gives you access. Look up the redownload policy for the base game and any add-on you intend to use.
Check the publisher's notice for the specific activity, such as matchmaking, posting to a leaderboard or playing locally. If the notice answers redownloads and leaves matchmaking unclear, keep the matchmaking entry open until you find a current answer.
