The campaign window has opened

Modern Warfare 4 campaign early access is live, according to Activision’s October 16, 2026 announcement. Eligible digital preorder and prepurchase owners can access the entire campaign before the full game’s October 23 launch. This October 18 report covers that access update; it is not a hands-on review or a claim that every mode has already launched.

The distinction is useful when a friend says a game is out. Ask which part they can actually start and what ownership grants access. A working campaign entitlement does not, by itself, establish that a different mode is available on the same date.

Which editions the publisher names

The official post identifies Standard Digital Edition and Vault Edition preorders or prepurchases. Its platform list names Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. It says campaign early access runs until the October 23 official launch.

Use the edition name on your own order or library entry when checking eligibility. A similarly named bundle, a different platform purchase or a remembered promotional headline is a weaker basis for deciding what an account owns. If the entitlement is unclear, check the relevant official store or support information before making another purchase.

A story update without the plot spoilers

The September 17 official campaign trailer article places John Price on the run after Task Force 141 is disbanded, while a conflict on the Korean Peninsula unfolds alongside the threat of a weapon reaching an adversary called the Archer. That is the publisher’s premise, rather than a summary drawn from playing through the newly accessible campaign.

For a spoiler-light starting point, choose whether you want that broad setup or a detailed recap before opening campaign coverage. A review, a mission walkthrough and an access announcement answer different questions. Here the immediate question is whether an eligible owner can begin, not how the story ends or how long your playthrough will take.

Keep the next two dates separate

Activision’s current announcement also points to DMZ early access starting October 20 and the full Modern Warfare 4 launch on October 23. Both are future dates as of this report. They should not be treated as modes we have opened or verified in a live session.

When planning with friends, write the mode beside the date instead of sharing a bare launch countdown. Decide which version of the plan matters to each person: beginning the campaign alone, arranging a later group session, or waiting for the broader release. That avoids a common mismatch where everyone agrees on the game but means a different activity.

Check the conditions on your own platform

The earlier trailer announcement notes that actual play time can depend on outages and time-zone differences, and that platform availability or start dates can change. A published access window is therefore different from proof that a particular account has installed and launched the right content successfully.

A practical check is to confirm the account, platform edition, required installation and current official support notices in that order. Keep a record of any error wording when seeking help. We have not measured download sizes, tested server availability in every region or reproduced platform-specific launch problems, so none of those claims is implied by this report.

Choose the kind of first session you want

If you are starting the campaign, set a comfortable stopping point rather than treating early access as a requirement to finish before friends. Decide how you will discuss progress without spoiling later missions for others. A simple agreement to name the last completed mission before a conversation is more useful than assuming everyone has reached the same point.
