Replay Takeover in Fighting Games: Practice From a Match
Replay takeover lets you revisit a match with the controls in your hands. Compare Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8, plus replay version limits.

Choose the decision you want to revisit
Replay takeover in fighting games lets you resume control inside a recorded match and try a different decision at the moment that interests you. It connects replay review with playable practice. The starting situation comes from a fight that already happened, including the distance and timing that made it awkward.
Suppose you blocked a sequence and then got hit when you tried to respond. Watching can locate that moment. Taking control lets you ask which input you could have tried from that position. Start with that small question, because it gives the replay a point to return to.
Street Fighter 6 lets you choose either fighter
Capcom introduced Replay Review in Street Fighter 6’s September 24, 2024 update. Its announcement named PS5, PS4 and Xbox Series X|S, as well as PC, and describes taking control of either character during an online or offline match replay. It also documents playback speed changes and a frame counter.
The choice of fighter changes the question you can investigate. You might resume your own character to try a defensive response. Taking the other side can help you explore the attack that created the situation. Choose the side and the moment before starting, so the attempt has a clear purpose.
Tekken 8 pairs tips with a short playable window
Tekken 8’s My Replays & Tips supports replays from online fights and offline modes including Arcade Quest and Super Ghost Battle. Its official mode guide describes a ten-second retry feature and repeated practice through displayed tips. The console editions are PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The guide names suggestions for combos, guaranteed counterattacks and high attacks that can be avoided by crouching. A suggestion gives you a concrete action to inspect. Use the short window to locate the relevant attack and try the response at that point.
Use one recorded mistake as a practice task
Imagine a replay in which you get hit by the final high strike in a sequence. A displayed tip identifies crouching as an available answer. Return to the moment before that strike, take control and try the crouch. Then watch whether the attack passes over the character. This is an illustrative task built around the documented tip feature.
If the attempt fails, inspect when you began the action and which strike hit. Starting too late and responding to a different attack are different observations. Writing down the attack’s position in the sequence makes the next attempt easier to compare.
Turn a successful response into the next question
Once a response works in that recorded situation, look for another occurrence of the same attack. Notice whether the characters are closer, near a wall or acting after a different lead-in. Those details can give you a second situation to investigate with the same tool.
In a later match, your next task is recognizing the cue while the opponent is choosing what to do. Look for whether you noticed the opening in time and attempted the response you intended. That keeps the practice connected to a specific decision you can observe during play.
Check whether an update preserved the replay
Replay data can have a version boundary. Tekken 8’s September 10, 2026 version 3.02.02 notice says earlier Downloaded Replays and My Replay & Tips data become unplayable after that update. It also says earlier Online Replay data are deleted. Keep that dated rule attached to this update when deciding what you can revisit.
Review an important situation while the replay is available. Keep a note of the matchup, software version, moment and response you tried. If a later update changes access to the recording, those details preserve the question you wanted to investigate in a fresh match.
Keep exploring
